Sales of Samsung Electronics's smartphone are surging thanks to the popularity of Android-based model, especially Galaxy S.
When the Galaxy S launched in June, sales of the Android-based phone were expected to pass 10 million units this year. Galaxy S has sold 1.8 million units in the local market as of the end of November, surpassing Apple iPhone's accumulated sales of 1.6 million units of iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4s.

Lagging far behind in the lucrative, fast growing smartphone market with around 4 percent market share as of the end of last year, Samsung is emerging as a wonder child backed by anti-Apple camps, including Google and non-iPhone-distributed mobile carriers, and hopes to calm down iPhone effects around world.
Aiming towards the high-end market and mainly competing with iPhone 4, the Android-based GalaxyS is being put out in front, while the Wave, which is based on Samsung's own bada platform, is targeting the mass market.
