KT selected Samsung Electronics and the consortium of KT Networks and Huawei as telecom equipment providers for its new mobile WiMAX project, which is expected to inject as large as 200 billion won (about US$182 million). After the final benchmark test (BMT) coming May, the company expects to deliver its mobile WiMAX solution to KT in the third quarter, according to Huawei.
Samsung Electronics unveiled the first smartphone, called "Wave," to adopt its own platform, "bada," at an event on February 14, the day before the opening of Mobile World Congress 2010. The first bada powered device will be available in late March or early April in the global market. Samsung aims to boost total handset sales by 19 percent to 270 million units this year, up from 227 million units last year.
The three IPTV operators combined garnered 1.8 million subscribers as of the end of January. KT controls about half of that followed by SK Broadband and LG Telecom.
Although the number of IPTV subscribers relatively increased over the first half of last year, the new service still needs more time to be a new growth engine for each operator.
